įrom 1949 through 1950, Davis recorded twelve tunes with a nonet consisting of himself and other noted jazz musicians Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, John Lewis, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke, with some playing at this particular time unusual musical instruments like French horn or tuba. The delay was typical for recordings made before the first 78 rpm long-playing records were introduced in 1948 by Columbia Records. The earliest Davis music so far released was recorded from Apthrough August 14, 1947, and released on Jby Savoy Records under the title First Miles. He recorded studio albums under this record label from 1951 through 1961, with the exception of Blue Moods, issued by Debut Records in 1955. Prestige Records released his major debut album Blue Period in 1951. Davis made his debut as a leader in the 1947 jam sessions featuring Parker, pianist John Lewis, bassist Nelson Boyd and drummer Max Roach. By 1945 he abandoned his academic studies to start a career as a musician, joining Benny Carter's band and making his first tunes as a sideman. His major discography consists of 67 studio albums, 53 live albums, 61 compilation albums, 17 box sets, 3 soundtrack albums and 48 vinyl records.ĭavis' initial appearances on record were mainly as a member of bebop saxophonist Charlie Parker's quintet from 1944 through 1947.
